Whether you swear by cod, back haddock, or champion plaice — and whether you drizzle gravy, dollop mushy peas or opt for curry sauce — one thing the nation can agree on is that fish and chips reign supreme as the ultimate British family meal.
On 6th June, the UK will once again unite for National Fish and Chip Day, and this year marks a particularly special milestone — its 10th anniversary.
What began as a modest campaign has now grown into the UK’s biggest food awareness day, celebrating the rich tradition and community spirit surrounding Britain’s most iconic dish.
National Fish and Chip Day pays tribute to everyone involved in getting fish and chips from ocean to plate — from the fishermen braving all weathers, to the farmers harvesting potatoes and peas, and the chefs, shop owners and home cooks who serve up this comforting classic with pride.
Gary Lewis, President of The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA), the founders of the event, said:
“This year marks a significant milestone for National Fish and Chip Day as we celebrate its 10th anniversary! Over the past decade, we’ve seen incredible support from everyone involved with fish and chips across the UK, and we’re thrilled to continue honouring this iconic British dish.
Fish and chip shops are at the heart of our communities, and getting involved in this celebration is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the quality and tradition of this family favourite. We encourage all shops to take part and share in the pride and joy that National Fish and Chip Day represents.”
NEODA launched National Fish and Chip Day in 2015, and the annual celebration is now a firm favourite on the national calendar. As ever, this year’s event is supported not only by NEODA members but also by major industry names including Middletons Foods and the Hook and Fish Packaging Range.
Whether you’re heading to your local chippy or frying up your own fish supper at home, 6th June is the perfect time to raise a fork to a beloved British institution.
