Companies in Wiltshire are facing increasing challenges in recruiting skilled engineers, as persistent shortages across technical disciplines continue to affect hiring across the UK, according to analysis from CMD Recruitment.
Research conducted among HR and recruitment professionals nationwide shows that the average hiring period across all sectors is now 4.9 weeks, a figure that includes engineering and maintenance roles.
CMD Recruitment’s most recent report reveals that more than three-quarters of engineering firms in Wiltshire, specifically 76%, are encountering difficulties when attempting to fill vital technical positions.
The issue is particularly pronounced in industries such as defence, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, where the lack of skilled professionals is leading to delays in delivery and increased operational pressure.
“Recruitment delays are not unique to Wiltshire, but the combination of regional competition and specialised skill requirements means local employers face distinctly tough market conditions,” said Dan Barfoot, Operations Manager at CMD Recruitment.
“Understanding national hiring trends alongside local data helps employers plan more effectively and align workforce strategies with the realities of today’s labour market.”
Despite a general decline in job vacancies across the UK, shortages remain significant in sectors including construction, engineering, rail, IT, and skilled trades.
Employers within these industries continue to struggle to identify candidates with the necessary technical capabilities, and some estimates suggest that the UK must attract tens of thousands of new engineers each year to meet ongoing and future needs.
As a result, local recruitment agencies are becoming increasingly important, supporting organisations by providing access to pre-qualified candidates and helping to shorten hiring cycles, particularly for specialised roles.
The report from CMD Recruitment also underlines the importance of flexible workforce planning, encouraging the use of temporary and contract staffing solutions to keep projects on track amid limited talent availability.
Looking ahead, demand for technical skills and project-focused roles is expected to remain high throughout 2026, making early collaboration with specialist recruitment partners a key strategy for businesses aiming to avoid disruption and maintain performance.
