As we are finally exiting the winter period here in the UK, it is now time to start brainstorming ideas for our 2025 summer destinations. Whether it’s a fleeting city break with your partner or a relaxed poolside holiday with the kids, we all deserve a little rest this summer. We Brits don’t tend to venture too far outside Europe when it comes to holidaying. Let’s have a look at some of the most popular European city destinations visited recently by British tourists. It might spark some ideas for your next break!
Top 3 Cities
Barcelona
I think it’s fair to say that we Brits are known for having a special love for Spain when it comes to holiday-making. Around 15 million people from the UK visit Spain every year. And it’s completely understandable. With some of the most beautiful beaches and cities in Europe, Spain makes for a beautiful getaway from our dreary weather.
Barcelona, a city that combines the magic of both beach and city life, is one of the most popular destinations for us. And there is no mystery as to why. It is a vibrant spot, with the most beautiful architecture, food and culture in the entire world. It is best known for the tourist hotspots like the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Parc Güell and Camp Nou. With excellent food spots scattered throughout every corner of the city, it’s an easy holiday to say yes to.
Of course, when we think of Spain, one of the first things that comes to mind is the weather. Barcelona benefits from some of the most gorgeous summers that Spain does see. There are usually averages of 27 to 29 degrees in the summer months, with minimal days of rain. You can enjoy the beach during the day and make the most of the city life at night.
To make the most of your time in Barcelona, it’s important to pick the right accommodation and the best area. Hotels and even hostels tend to be very overpriced nowadays (for what they are), particularly during the summer. This is simply due to the high demand. If you are looking for a mix of both convenience and comfort, holiday apartments in Barcelona are a good option. You should consider what activities or sights to prioritise when holidaying in Barcelona. This way you can pick your accommodation in order to make the most out of your time.
Amsterdam
Only a stone’s throw away from the UK, Amsterdam has become a viral destination for Brits to visit. With videos trending on TikTok of food reviews, activities to do and the best places to stay, it’s hard to not be tempted. Viral locations like Von Stapele Cookie Shop or the A’DAM Lookout are certainly reaping the benefits of the rise in tourism.
In 2023, just over 1 million UK citizens took the short trip to the Dutch metropolis. With flights ranging from just 60 to 90 minutes from anywhere in the UK, it’s easy to understand why the city is so popular. Of course, the main tourist attractions such as a boat ride along the canal, the Van Gogh museum and most famous of all, the Anne Frank house is what entice most of us.
With so much to see, do, eat and experience, Amsterdam is definitely a bucket list city. The only issue in recent times is the accommodation crisis in the Netherlands. Given that the country is experiencing a housing crisis, there has been a shift in views on tourism i.e. tourists arriving and staying in Airbnb’s, rental apartments, etc. If you plan on visiting soon, ensure that you have accommodation planned in advance and always be respectful of the locals.
Paris
The city of love and lights. And Europe’s most visited city. Paris, welcoming over 45 million international tourists, is a city for the books. It provides an enriching experience like no other, with its romantic vibe, outstanding architecture and world-class cuisine. Iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame and Arc de Triomphe are an absolute must-see for any history lovers.
Over 2.7 million UK holiday goers made their way to the French capital in 2023. Whether it’s for a romantic weekend away, an educational trip or a simple reason to get out of the UK, Paris has all there is to offer. It is a city so rich in history, with some of the best museums in the world. The streets are adorned with fantastic little cafés and chic French boutiques. Not to mention that of the most famous Michelin star restaurants reside in Paris.
Like its neighbouring country Spain, France benefits from a rather warm climate throughout the year, making it an excellent destination for the British folk. And the best thing about it? It’s easily accessible. You don’t even need to fly! The Eurostar train can get you from London to Paris in just over 2 hours. It’s definitely worth the journey.

Tips for British tourists
Best time to go
We would recommend the Barcelona and Paris holidays for the summer. This is so you make the most of the good weather and really take in all the cities have to offer. Amsterdam could be done as a winter break getaway. Wrap up nice and cosy and spend your time trying the food spots and visiting all the museums.
How to save money?
If you’re on a budget but still in need of a break, the best advice we can give is to book as far in advance as possible. At least 3 months before your trip if possible. Opt for budget travel airlines and make use of public transport in the city you’re in. There are also cheap food options everywhere if you’re not looking to spend a bomb on fancy dinners.
Do what you want to do
It’s your trip, so make the most of it! See the sights that you’ve been dying to visit, and eat whatever food tickles your fancy. You don’t have to listen to everyone you see on social media or feel like you have to try something because it’s trending. Gorgeous cities like Barcelona, Amsterdam and Paris have something for everyone. Enjoy it!
