Fish and chip shops across the United Kingdom are coming together on 8th May 2025 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a nationwide show of appreciation and remembrance.
To mark the historic date, participating chip shops will provide a 10% discount on walk-up orders exceeding £50, inviting families and communities to celebrate over one of Britain’s most treasured dishes. The initiative aims to highlight the enduring role of fish and chips in British history — particularly during wartime.
During World War II, fish and chips were a source of both sustenance and comfort. They were famously exempt from rationing and became a symbol of national morale. Sir Winston Churchill affectionately referred to them as the “Good companions!” — a nod to their cultural importance during those difficult years.
To help customers find nearby participants, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) and Chippy Chat Magazine have created an online directory of businesses offering the VE Day discount. Visit VEFishandChips.co.uk to explore your local options.
The campaign is led by the NFFF, encouraging chip shop owners across the country to get involved. President Andrew Crook reflected on the significance of the day:
“This is a unique opportunity to remember how the nation came together to overcome adversity 80 years ago and how they came through it. It is a humbling thought that the fish and chip industry played a part in the war effort. Even on the D-Day landings, the initial push into Europe by the Allies, they used ‘fish’ and the response ‘and chips’ as one of the passwords.
“Fish and chips are still the nations favourite dish and we hope customers make us their preferred choice over the VE Day celebrations this week.”
