Khloé Kardashian has always shown deep commitment to her family — and now, that extends beyond her own children. The reality star and entrepreneur recently opened up about her decision to become the full-time caretaker for Amari Thompson, the younger brother of her ex, NBA player Tristan Thompson.
During a candid “Ask Me Anything” episode of her podcast Khloé in Wonder Land, released July 30, the 41-year-old shared her reasons for stepping into a role that many didn’t expect — but that she’s taken on with love, intention, and compassion.
A Life-Altering Loss — and a Big Decision
The turning point came in January 2023 when Tristan’s mother, Andrea Thompson, suddenly passed away. Andrea had been Amari’s sole caregiver in Canada, where the family had lived for years. Amari, now 18, has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a rare and severe form of epilepsy that leaves him unable to walk or speak and causes him to suffer daily seizures.
“With his mom gone,” Khloé explained, “we — me, Tristan, my whole family — took Amari back with us to the States.”
Why Amari Lives With Khloé in Los Angeles
While Tristan remains actively involved in Amari’s life, Khloé clarified that his demanding NBA schedule makes it nearly impossible for him to care for his brother full-time. Constant travel and changing cities every few days just aren’t safe for someone with Amari’s medical needs.
“Amari has a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy he has,” Khloé said. “It’s just not conducive for him to be traveling that much. So Amari stays in LA with me, and I’ve chosen to take care of him and be there for him.”
Her decision wasn’t born out of obligation — it was made from a place of deep care and love. “I love having Amari be a part of my family,” she added.
Creating a Loving Home and Support System
While Khloé is hands-on, she also acknowledged the help she receives: “We have two sensational caretakers for Amari,” she noted, giving credit to the professionals who help provide around-the-clock support.
Together, the goal is simple: to give Amari the most joyful and comfortable life possible. “We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how. And he deserves that.”
Teaching Her Kids Compassion Through Amari
For Khloé, having Amari in her home has also become a profound teaching experience for her own children — daughter True and son Tatum — both of whom she shares with Tristan. She emphasized how important it is for kids to grow up around people with different needs and experiences.
“I think it’s so important for my kids, my nieces and nephews, to be exposed to all different types of people in the world,” she said. “It teaches everyone compassion, understanding. It opens up their minds.”
Amari may be nonverbal, but that doesn’t stop him from forming meaningful connections with those around him. “If you know him well enough, he can definitely express himself, and you see the glimmer in his eyes,” Khloé shared with warmth. “And he’s just such an amazing, amazing young man.”
“I’m Honored to Have Amari in My Life”
With a calm sense of pride, Khloé reflected on the bond she’s built with Amari. “I’m so proud and honored that I have Amari in my life,” she said.
Her words painted a clear picture — this is not just about caregiving. It’s about choosing love, family, and presence in the most selfless way.
