Todd Snider — the alt-country trailblazer celebrated for his wit, heart and unmistakable storytelling — has died at 59. His team confirmed the news in a statement shared to his social media accounts on Nov. 15, revealing the singer-songwriter passed away just weeks after suffering “severe injuries” from an alleged violent assault.
“Aimless, Inc. Headquarters is heartbroken to share that our Founder, our Folk Hero, our Poet of the World… our beloved Todd Daniel Snider has departed this world,” the statement read. “Where do we find the words for the one who always had the right words?”
From Free-Spirited Troubadour to Americana Pioneer
Born in Oregon and shaped by Nashville’s legendary songwriting scene, Snider moved south in the ’90s and quickly became a force in Americana. A self-described free spirit with a razor-sharp pen, he soaked up wisdom from icons like Jimmy Buffett, Billy Joe Shaver, Guy Clark, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson and Jerry Jeff Walker — all of whom later considered him a peer.
His breakout album East Nashville Skyline (2004) cemented him as a cornerstone of the modern Americana and alt-country movement. “He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens,” the tribute continued.
A Final Chapter Marked by Violence and Uncertainty
Earlier this month, Snider was arrested in Salt Lake City on charges including disorderly conduct and trespassing. He was released hours later and immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Shortly after, Snider shared with fans that he had been the “victim of a violent assault outside his hotel” and would be canceling all remaining dates on his Lonesome and Then Some tour. “Todd will be unable to perform for an undetermined amount of time,” his Nov. 3 announcement read. “We appreciate your understanding as Todd receives needed medical treatment.”
