Helen Mirren has dropped a big hint about the future of Netflix’s star-studded new mystery film The Thursday Murder Club—and fans will love what she had to say. The Oscar winner revealed she and her co-stars would “jump at the chance” to return for sequels, describing the experience of filming the first installment as one of pure joy.
Based on Richard Osman’s hugely popular novel, The Thursday Murder Club follows a group of four retirees—played by Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie and Sir Ben Kingsley—who spend their golden years solving cold cases for fun. Speaking about the upcoming Netflix release, Mirren said: “I’d do another in a nanosecond. And it would be the team getting back together, which would be great. We did have a wonderful time shooting this. So all of us would jump at the chance, quite honestly.”
The good news for fans is that the source material is already lined up. Osman has published three sequels to the original novel, with a fifth installment set to arrive in September. That means Netflix has plenty of material to fuel an ongoing franchise if the first film connects with audiences.
Mirren also opened up about her chemistry with her co-star Pierce Brosnan, who she recently worked alongside in the TV drama MobLand, where they played a married couple. “They are totally different characters, but Pierce and I have a very similar way of working, which is serious without being too serious about ourselves,” she explained. “Neither of us is what you would call a method actor. We find a nice, comfortable seat to sit in with our scripts and just chill together. Pierce is my wonderful late discovery. I’d like to work with Pierce for the rest of my life. I feel that we have a real chemistry.”
The cast list for The Thursday Murder Club doesn’t stop with the central quartet. Naomi Ackie, Tom Ellis, David Tennant and Henry Lloyd-Hughes also join the mystery ensemble, while veteran filmmaker Chris Columbus takes the director’s chair. Columbus himself has already teased a desire to make sequels, saying the combination of Osman’s writing and a powerhouse cast gave him one of the best filming experiences of his career.
With a stellar lineup, a beloved book series and Netflix’s global reach, The Thursday Murder Club could easily become the streaming giant’s next big franchise. Whether it’s the quirky humor, the heartwarming friendships, or the thrill of an old-fashioned whodunnit, this is one crime club fans will want to see reunited again and again.
The Thursday Murder Club premieres on Netflix on August 28, 2025.
