It’s easy to see why so many of us are now choosing to buy our pharmacy items online: it’s much quicker, easier, and more convenient than paying a visit to a physical store.
But there can be some risks associated with any form of online shopping, and when you’re buying something that has a direct impact on your health, you’ll need to make sure it’s from a site you can trust.
With that in mind, here are 4 things you should look for when you’re buying from an online pharmacy.
- Check the Pharmacy is Registered
Before you even start browsing, make sure the online pharmacy you’re using is registered. Any online pharmacy operating in the UK must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The site should display the GPhC logo and mention that it’s registered, with a business address and registration number, on the home page. You can then click through to confirm it’s linked to a real listing.
- Check Contact Details and Real Support
You should be able to get in touch with a pharmacist if you have a question about your order or need advice on a product before you spend your money. Good pharmacies make it easy to get help.
Even so, not all online pharmacies are going to offer this, despite it being a pretty basic service. So, before you search for the product you’re after, check the site to see if there’s a contact number or email. Even better if they offer live chat with real people (not AI bots) or video consultations for prescription items.
- Check the Site is Clear on What Needs a Prescription
Some medications, like antibiotics, most hormone treatments, and those used to treat long-term conditions (like asthma or high blood pressure), legally require a prescription for pharmacies to sell them to you.
If you’re buying prescription meds, look for a site like www.hightownpharmacy.co.uk, which very clearly explains which medications are prescription-only, and why. If you come across a pharmacy that sells these items without asking for a prescription or online consultation, there’s a high chance that you’re not buying from a regulated source.
- Compare Prices, But Don’t Go Too Cheap
Finally, everyone wants a good deal, but if the price a site is offering for your medication looks far lower than other providers, you need to ask why.
For instance, some sites sell products that look the same but aren’t licensed for sale in the UK, while others sell rebranded stock or medications with short sell-by dates without making it clear. You’re best only buying from websites that show the product label, ingredient list, and expiry date for the item you want to order.
It’s completely safe to buy pharmacy products online, as long as you use a registered and transparent provider. So, follow this checklist before you spend your money, and don’t ignore the red flags.
