A one-time lorry driver, mechanic, and police officer has swapped engines and arrest logs for laughter and imagination after becoming a published children’s author in his seventies.
Glyn Davies never planned on turning writing into a career. His first book, Trevor the Tractor, was written more than 30 years ago, scribbled in the cab of a broken-down lorry while waiting for a tow truck. Originally a bedtime story for his daughter, that simple tale has now grown into a published collection bringing joy to children and adults alike.
“I wanted my stories to be a legacy for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” said Glyn Davies. “If I can make people laugh along the way, that’s a bonus.”
Davies draws inspiration from everyday life — a quirky garden shed, a memorable logo, or nostalgic childhood Christmas moments. His stories feature a cast of hilarious characters, including the bumbling Catastrophic Santa and intergalactic hero Phartman, and are heavily influenced by the slapstick humour of the 1950s comedians he admired, like Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin.
After a career that took him across Europe and the Middle East, Davies turned to Amazon to self-publish his stories. What started as a private gift for family has grown into an inspiring example of lifelong creativity.
“Growing old is a privilege, but growing up is optional,” he added. “I’ve always loved making people smile, and I’ll keep writing for as long as I have ideas.”
Davies’ books are now available on Amazon and through his personal website, with hopes they’ll continue to entertain “anyone who’s still a kid inside” for years to come.
