Exploring Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is not only the island’s capital, but also the cultural and social heart of the Canary archipelago. Upon arrival, you’ll find an enviable climate that averages 22 degrees Celsius all year round, making it the perfect destination for any season.
Vegueta is the old quarter of the city and this is where it all began. Stroll through its cobbled streets and discover the Cathedral of Santa Ana, which began to be built in the 15th century and still stands imposingly in the cityscape today. Not far away, you’ll find the Casa de Colón, a museum dedicated to Christopher Columbus’ explorations and his relationship with the Canary Islands.
Tourist sites to visit in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Castle of La Luz
This fortress is the oldest building in the city and construction began in 1478. Juan Rejón had it built to protect the city from pirate attacks.
You will find it in the district of La Isleta, right next to the Puerto de la Luz, which is the maritime, fishing and recreational centre of the area.
This place is not only a Historic-Artistic Monument, but also houses the Martín Chirino Foundation of Art and Thought. A selection of works by the famous sculptor from the Canary Islands is on display here.
Beaches and Natures
Las Canteras is one of the most famous urban beaches in Europe and a must for any visitor. Its calm waters and natural barrier reef make it ideal for swimming and snorkelling. In addition, the promenade is lined with cafes and restaurants where you can sample delicious local dishes while enjoying the sea view.
Bandama Caldera

Canarian Garden
On the outskirts of the city is the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, also known as the Jardín Canario. It is a space full of nature and highly recommended by the locals.
We visited it one morning on the recommendation of some locals and really enjoyed the walk. If you plan to visit it, we suggest you dedicate enough time to it as it is located in the Guiniguada ravine, near Santa Brigida, about 10 km from the centre of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Canarian Garden covers 27 hectares, making it the largest in Spain. It is organised into various sections where you can see everything from local species such as Canary Island pines, dragon trees and heathers, to more exotic plants.
Canarian Museum
In the neighbourhood of Vegueta, I recommend you visit another museum especially if you are interested in the aboriginal history of the Canary Islands. This museum is perfect for the more adventurous and curious, as it houses a fascinating collection of mummies and skulls.
Here you can explore the treasures, history and unique culture of the island, which is very interesting for those who like history and anthropology.
We were fascinated by it because it shows a very different side of history to what is commonly known about the cultures of the peninsula.
The Cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
In the Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana is the Cathedral, easily recognisable by the eight large statues of dogs that guard it, known as the ‘guards of Santa Ana’. You’re sure to want to have your photo taken with them.
The cathedral features a combination of architectural styles including Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical, as its construction spanned four centuries. The interior of the temple is impressive, standing out for its luminosity, the design of its ceiling and its colourful stained-glass windows.
