    Cycling is advantageous for us in many ways. It helps us reach our destinations quickly, boosts mental health, and, most importantly, acts as a beneficial physical exercise.

    Because biking burns a lot of energy and uses our nutrients, bikers need to focus on what to eat and drink during bike rides. 

    If you’re planning to go on long bike rides, whether alone or with the company, you need to learn about the important cycling nutrition you should intake regularly. Preparing your body for it starts early. However, you also need to intake nutrient-rich food during your bike rides. 

     

    Nutritional Requirements For Bikers

    Biking requires a lot of energy and replenishment for your body, especially if you’re about to cycle across long distances. Proper preparation before you start your journey and taking care of particular nutritional needs during your cycling will majorly help you stay fit and perform better.

    • Proteins

    Proteins are essential in building muscles. Before and during your long bike rides, whether with a lightweight electric bike or a heavy mountain bike, you must intake a good amount of protein from healthy sources. This way, you can allow your muscle to recover after long bike rides.

    • Carbohydrates

    Carbohydrates have been widely known to release a lot of energy in your body during strenuous activities while filling you up adequately. Whether in simple form or complex ones, carbohydrates fuel our body when working out, which can keep us going for a little over an hour. Therefore, it’s important to incorporate a carbohydrate-rich diet for regular bikers.

    • Vitamins and Minerals

    Eating a healthy, balanced meal consisting of all the essential vitamins and minerals is necessary for everyone. They help our immunity, bone and muscle strength, structure, growth, and repair, and they also aid in the activities of our nervous system. While you may not be able to get everything from your meals, supplements can provide you with the rest. 

    • Fat

    Another great fuel for our body is fat, whether good or bad. Whichever you ingest, you’re not just using them as your energy source but also to help your body absorb vitamins and minerals effectively and use them properly. These will help your body recover, energize, and immunize. However, consuming bad fats can slow down your stamina and mobility, so you should resort to good fats as much as possible.

    • Electrolyte

    Our body needs all types of ions to aid our muscle movements and coordination and for our brain to function properly. They also regulate our blood pressure and maintain our cardiac rhythm. Bike rides cause sweating, which means loss of electrolytes. Therefore, electrolyte drinks will help you replenish what you lost, and you’ll perform better. 

     

    Things You Should Eat During Bike Rides

    While you need nutritious food during your cycling, you also need to prepare yourself with proper nutrition the morning of the journey and also the days before that. Healthy breakfasts, protein, carb-heavy foods, and lots of fruits will help you prepare your body for the big event. 

    Here are some things you must carry and eat periodically during your biking to keep yourself healthy and performing well. Remember, you must prioritize your health over anything else, to begin with.

    • Dried Fruits

    Dried fruits are concentrated in most of the things your body will need: good fat, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, you just name it. Make a dried fruit mix with dried figs, dates, apricots, raisins, cherries, and a few nuts to get everything you need. You must include cashews, almonds, and pistachios in the mix for good fat, proteins, carbs, vitamin E, and some essential nutrients. 

    • Energy Bars

    The name itself suggests the benefits. And if you have a food routine to match your gym habits, you are familiar with these gold-like bars. Energy bars consist of things that’ll give you an instant energy boost whenever you need it. You can find them in various flavors, so you can choose them according to your taste or needs. Try the ones with peanut butter and dried fruits, as they’re more natural and will fill you up adequately. 

    • Dark Chocolate

    Every cyclist should carry a bar of dark chocolate in their backpack. Although the word ‘chocolate’ is associated with being unhealthy, these treats are actually full of antioxidants, especially if you eat dark chocolate. It’ll also help you improve your focus, maintain your blood pressure, regulate your heart functions, and give you a natural boost of energy.

     

    Tips to Keep You Hydrated

    Among the things you must eat and drink during bike rides, water, and electrolyte drinks are essentials. Citrus fruits should be with you too as they have vitamin C and water content in them, thus acting as a source of important cycling nutrition. 

    • Drink Plenty of Water

    Since you’ll be sweating a lot, you’ll lose water from your body. Drinking plenty of water will help your cells function properly, keep your kidneys healthy, and keep your motor functions active. Carry plenty of water with you and stop frequently for water breaks to avoid dehydration and carry out your journey successfully.

    • Carry an Electrolyte Drink

    We lose a lot of necessary salt through our skin when we sweat, especially during bike rides. To make up for the lost salt consisting of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chlorine, etc., and electrolyte drinks can help you a great deal. These consist of all the necessary ions for our body in adequate amounts, which will help you recover from salt loss during long bike rides. 

    • Eat Citrus Fruits

    Citrus fruits mainly help strengthen our immune system. However, if you want your body to retain enough water in its cells, citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, pomelo, clementine, etc., will help. These are full of water and vitamin C, making them a powerhouse of hydration. 

     

    Final Thoughts:

    You must take small breaks during your bike rides at regular intervals. In this time, supply your body with the important cycling nutrition your body needs to keep going. Otherwise, you may exhaust yourself, making it hard to recover. 

    Eat little, eat often, and listen to your body very attentively. Take care of the things to eat and drink during bike rides, and your body will be thanking you later as you’ll recover quickly and repair any injury properly.
