With winter firmly making its presence known, many holidaymakers start daydreaming about their next trip to sunnier climes. Hopping across to Europe opens up a multitude of different countries for you to explore.
Whether you are looking for a quick weekend away or a relaxing all-inclusive holiday, here are three underrated cities that should make it into your travel plans.
Seville, Spain
When travellers think of Spain, Barcelona and Madrid are often the go-to destinations. Seville, however, is just as beautiful.
If you are looking for warmth and sun, Seville offers hot temperatures throughout the year, but particularly in late spring and early autumn – perfect for travelling outside of the school holidays. The mercury can easily soar to 35°C in the summer, but it is pleasant for the rest of the year, so you will be pleased whenever you visit.
Seville is home to the spectacular Real Alcázar Palace, which is a textbook example of Mudéjar architecture, and the impressive Plaza de España. Whether you visit these or look for authentic experiences at Flamenco peñas in the Triana neighbourhood, Seville is steeped in history, romance and authenticity.
Valletta, Malta
Malta’s capital, Valetta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by the warm Mediterranean Sea. Visiting here means you are guaranteed a warm, sunny trip.
Due to being further south than most major European cities, Valetta is treated to scorching summers and mild winters, welcoming sun-seekers all year long.
This fortified city is home to both Italian and North African influences, and this is apparent in both architecture and cuisine. Spend a day wandering the length of Republic Street, stopping to take in the historical landmarks intermingled with boutique shops and cafes.
The Grand Harbour is a feat to behold. The best way to see it is from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, which are beautiful in their own right.
Novi Sad, Serbia
Serbia doesn’t automatically come to mind for hot weather destinations, but Novi Sad will surprise you.
Nominated as the European Capital of Culture in 2022, Novi Sad is the perfect backdrop of Austro-Hungarian architecture on the Danube for any holiday. It is best to visit the city in the summer, where you will find warmth and sunshine. Winter is cold and can be snowy – much like home!
Although relatively unknown, Novi Sad is gaining a reputation for culture, driven by its thriving student population. The majestic Petrovaradian Fortress is not only historically significant, but it is also home to the massive EXIT music festival. Typically held in the middle of July, this musical extravaganza has hosted top-tier musicians over the years, such as Guns N’ Roses, Snoop Dogg and The Killers. This festival is a must-see for music fans.
