New Orleans, Louisiana

• Commander’s Palace – Head over to the garden district for an iconic fine-dining experience at Commander’s Palace. Renowned for its upscale Creole cuisine and friendly customer service, this spot has been a pillar of the New Orleans’ culinary world since 1893. Greenville, Mississippi

• Sherman’s Restaurant – This long-standing family-owned establishment has been serving up classic Southern American cuisine since 1947. Famous for its welcoming atmosphere and home-cooked meals, there’s something for everyone at this eatery. Visitors can choose from fried chicken, seafood and steaks to start, followed by one of their homemade pies for dessert. If you’re looking for traditional Southern cooking, don’t skip this Greenville spot.

• Shotgun House BBQ – Celebrated for its flavourful barbecue and Southern hospitality, Shotgun House BBQ is a popular spot amongst tourists and locals alike. The menu includes a wide variety of smoked meats including pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and sausage. All of which are cooked to perfection with a blend of unique spices. No Southern dish is complete without sides though, so be sure to check out their baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad during your visit.

• Jim’s Cafe – Opening  in 1909, Jim’s Cafe is a historical diner loved by many. Those looking for true Southern portions, comfort food favourites and a nostalgic atmosphere will truly appreciate this dining experience. Staples include catfish, meatloaf, collard greens and cornbread, just to name a few.

Memphis, Tennessee

• B.B. King’s Blues Club – You can’t visit Memphis without swinging by the vibrant Beale Street, and B.B. King’s Blues Club is the perfect place to soak up all this energetic street has to offer. Named after the legendary blues musician, you know you have to experience their live music featuring local musicians, in full force. All while tucking into classic Southern cuisine of course. Menu highlights include fried catfish, their ‘Lucille’ burger and barbecue ribs.

• Central BBQ – To experience true Southern BBQ, is to taste meat prepared with smokey dry rubs, and this spot is famous for theirs. Renowned for its smoked meats including slow-smoked ribs, pulled pork and beef brisket, visitors can also enjoy their tangy sauces, made to complement the meats perfectly.

• The Majestic Grille – Located in a restored 1913 movie theatre, The Majestic Grille is a beautiful, Hollywood glamour inspired restaurant that offers a unique dining experience. With a blend of American classics and contemporary cuisine, options include fresh seafood, gourmet flatbreads and crab cakes. The art deco decor and vintage film screenings only add to this eatery’s charm – you’re sure to have a memorable experience.

Nashville, Tennessee

• Hattie B’s Hot Chicken – Nashville is known for its fried chicken, so you simply can’t visit this world-famous city without visiting Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. Don’t be put off by the ‘hot’ though. This family owned since 2012, Hattie B’s offers a range of spice levels, from ‘Southern’ (no heat), to the ‘Shut the Cluck Up’ (extremely hot). Complete your dish with classic Southern sides such as pimento mac and cheese and crinkle-cut fries. Be sure to plan ahead for this one, you’re guaranteed to be met with a long line out the door – but with flavours like this, it will be worth it.

• The Catbird Seat – Those looking for an upscale dining experience with a twist must visit The Catbird Seat. This spot is chef-driven so you know it’s going to be packed with flavour, while offering an interactive experience thanks to its U-shaped counter surrounding the open kitchen. Offering a tasting menu that changes seasonally and made with locally sourced ingredients, the chef will talk you through each dish, creating a truly engaging experience. Reservations are highly recommended!

• The Loveless Cafe – Hitting the streets of Nashville for the first time in 1951, this historic cafe offers Southern comfort food and a warm atmosphere that’s legendary amongst locals. Their biscuits are famous and served with house-made preserves, making the perfect side for your fried chicken or country ham. With charming decor that oozes cosy and nostalgic, you’ll feel right at home here.

Atlanta, Georgia

• The Varsity – The world’s largest drive-in restaurant, this 1928 landmark is a must-see for those looking for a truly unique fast food dining experience. Offering a nostalgic taste of Americana with its chilli dogs and onion rings, the retro vibe is complete with a sprawling dining area and of course, carhops.

• Mary Mac’s Tea Room – Affectionately known as “Atlanta’s Dining Room”, this historic restaurant serves traditional Southern dishes sure to tickle your tastebuds. From fried chicken, collard greens and mac and cheese to homemade sweet potato soufflé, each meal starts with a complimentary cup of pot likker (the liquid that is left behind after boiling greens or beans) and cornbread for dipping.

• Staplehouse – Famous for its farm-to-table approach, Staplehouse perfectly combines fine dining with a warm, casual atmosphere. Being seasonally-driven and passionate about locally sourced ingredients, the menu changes frequently, making no two dining experiences the same. Plus, all dishes are creatively presented and boast innovative cooking techniques. What’s not to love?

Savannah, Georgia

• Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room – Experience a piece of history by visiting this old boarding house, which traditionally provided a communal dining room for locals many years ago. Taken over by Sema Wilkes in 1943, this Southern eatery still provides comfortable lodging and homestyle cooking, all served family style.

• The Grey – Located in the Greyhound Bus Terminal, its owners restored this spot to its original glory with an art deco theme to offer a truly glamorous dining experience. Dishes are soulful, packed with deep flavours and using regional produce. This passion for regional produce means the menu is constantly evolving, making no two visits the same.

• Leopold’s Ice Cream – Step back in time with a visit to this historical ice cream parlour, originally opened in 1919 by three brothers. Despite moving to a new location, the store holds many features from its original store and is still family run by the Leopold’s. It’s easy to see why this spot is loved amongst the locals. Don’t forget to try their famous, old-fashioned fountain sodas to create your own flavour combos.

St. Augustine, Florida

• The Floridian – If you’re looking for homestyle southern comfort foods with a healthier, creative twist, The Floridian is for you. There’s many vegetarian options on the menu, meaning plant eaters won’t be short of choice. Their menu changes seasonally and in line with local produce, so freshness is always guaranteed. Locals love their taco and waffle options so be sure to check them out.

• Catch 27 – Located in the heart of St. Augustine, Florida (the oldest city in the US), this spot is the place to go for freshly caught seafood. Boasting a great atmosphere and seasonal produce, there’s a reason it’s a popular spot. Dishes include a seasonal paella, Florida cioppino and a red wine beef brisket.

• Cousteau’s Waffle and Milkshake bar – In the mood for something sweet? Head to Couseau’s for hand-spun milkshakes and mouth watering, handmade waffles. Choose from endless toppings, such as candied pecans, candied bacon and homemade marshmallow fluff.
