The Gardens, a wedding and events venue in Yalding, Kent, has innovated during a challenging time for its industry by launching Tipis; a restaurant committed to keeping its carbon footprint low and supporting local food and drink producers.
Wednesday, 30 September 2020: Wedding and events venue, The Gardens in Yalding, Kent, has today announced the launch of its new restaurant, Tipis. From Thursday 8th October 2020, Tipis will serve seasonal British food from The Garden’s on-site tipis using ingredients sourced exclusively from local suppliers.
Tipis is committed to keeping its carbon footprint low and will be using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers that include David Catt & Sons (Boughton Monchelsea), Crouch Butchers (Bearsted Green), Linton Seafood (Tonbridge), and Taywell Ice Creams (Paddock Wood). Where possible, the restaurant will also harvest produce from its 12 acres of organic gardens, including honey from it’s on-site hive, freshly picked herbs, and the three varieties of apples featured in its Garden Apple Crumble.
Tipis is the brainchild of Glow Events, which runs weddings and events from The Gardens (Yalding), The Orangery (Maidstone), and The Castle Westenhanger (Hythe). With weddings of over 15 attendees postponed for the next six months, Glow Events will utilise its prestigious venue at The Gardens, professional chefs, and event planning expertise to bring a new, COVID-safe, dining experience to the local community.
The venue’s barn and tipis have been transformed by local styling company Hire Love to celebrate the outstanding natural beauty of the Kentish countryside and The Gardens. Diners will have access to 12 acres of grounds, a tipi restaurant, and a lounge bar. The lounge bar menu includes the ‘Paul Hollywood’, a bespoke gin-based drink created in honour of Kent’s Great British Bake Off star.

To say the wedding and event industry has been hit hard by COVID-19 would be a colossal understatement and yet challenging times often bring new opportunities; we will consider making Tipis a regular fixture at The Gardens if it is well-received. Above all, the safety of our customers is our absolute priority and we have instated significant COVID-19 precautions throughout the entire restaurant.”
“We have constructed a menu for Tipis that is inspired by the natural, seasonal beauty of The Gardens and it’s 12 acres of grounds, using the finest locally-sourced ingredients to reduce our carbon footprint and champion the Kent producers we have on our doorstep,” said Steve Redpath, Head Chef at Tipis. “Diners can expect rustic, comforting British dishes, from pumpkin soup, to steak and ale pie, wild mushroom risotto, and garden apple crumble. We offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.”
Bookings can be made for parties of up to six, as per government guidelines, with all government regulations strictly adhered to. All table bookings for Tipis must be made in advance to facilitate the restaurant’s decision to support better environmental practices and its move towards low waste, which will be achieved by cooking all dishes to order.

The Gardens is a leading wedding and events venue in Yalding, Kent. The 12 acres of beautiful grounds are divided into 16 distinct areas which demonstrate planting styles through the ages, from Medieval to World War II and everything in between. The Gardens first opened to the public in 1995 and were once described as “among the most inspirational garden acres anywhere” before closing in 2011. The venue’s current owners purchased The Gardens in 2013 and made a commitment to restore and replant the gardens into their original condition, working with one of the original gardeners to follow the site’s planting guidelines.
